Stock Idea: GMR Infra

There was major hullabaloo after GMR Infra posted a 70% (YoY) drop in net profit at Rs.22.50 crore for the first quarter. The share price dropped like nine pins and many of our subscribers have got a bit confused, post this result.

There is no need to panic. The drop is net profit is on account of the capitalization of the large assets at Delhi airport which led to huge depreciation and interest outgo. This is a normal phenomena with any large, capital intensive infra company, so no need to panic. And this in turn has affected the net profit. Depreciation outgo was up 72% (YoY) and interest outgo was up by a huge 132%. Naturally, with such huge outgo's it thus comes as no surprise to see the net margin getting affected.
But a look at the performance before these charges, indicates that the company actually has had a robust Q1. Net revenue was up 33% and EBIDTA was up 35%. The highest contributor to the revenue this quarter has been the roads whose sales went up 120%, energy contributed 24%, airports at 17%. But in terms of EBIT margins, airport was the highest at 137%, followed by roads at 128%.

GMR's Vemagiri Power Plant is operating at full load at a PLF of 82.2% and this is pursuant to the signing of gas supply agreement. Its Kamalanga Energy1050 MW coal based power project achieved financial closure. It also acquired two key power plants, thereby adding 600 MW in India and 800 MW in Singapore.

In its airports sector, GMR Hyderabad International Airport (GHIAL) was allowed to increase the landing and parking charges at 10%, with effect from July 01, 2009 and the effect of this would now be reflected in the performance of the company in Q2. The construction work in Delhi International Airport Pvt. Ltd. (DIAL) for the integrated Terminal-3 is complete to an extent of 72%. Its airport at Turkey has achieved 78% completion and the project is on track for commercial operation by end October 2009.

In roads, GMR won the bid for Hyderabad - Vijayawada (181 km) road, with an estimated project cost of Rs 2200 crore. It has also won the bid for Chennai Outer Ring Road (30 km) with an estimated project cost of Rs 1100 crore. This is the group's first state highway project. The sixth road project, the toll based GMR Ulundurpet Expressways commenced commercial operation on 24th July 2009 and this too shall start contributing well to the numbers in coming months.
An infra company of GMR's size cannot really be judged based on quarterly results. No need to worry. Stay invested and it holds potential to touch Rs.180 by Jan 2010.

Stock Idea: Tata Chemicals

Tata Chemicals, the second largest manufacturer of soda ash and the third largest producer of sodium bicarbonate in the world, apart from being the leader in the Indian market, posted a good set of results for the first quarter ended 30th June 2009. Lower input prices and a strict control on operating costs enabled healthy performance for the quarter under review.

Its revenue for Q1FY10 was up at Rs 1,441 crore up 19.4% on a YoY. PAT was up 61% at Rs.94 crore. But on a consolidated basis, net profit was at Rs 42.5 crore as against Rs 107 crore in Q1FY09 and its consolidated net sales were up at Rs 2,248 crore v/s Rs 2,186 crore in Q1FY09. This dip in profit is on account of the closure of its Netherlands unit. This restructuring bill was at Rs 87.36 crore.

Soda ash domestic demand grew 8%, driven largely by the detergents segment. Prices of raw materials declined faster than the price of soda ash and that helped the margins. Urea production was at around 3,500 tons per day. It has a 58% market share in its salt business.

A new Sodium bicarbonate plant with a capacity of 50,000 MT has commenced operations in UK and demand continues to be healthy though increasing imports are pressuring margins.

In fertilizer segment, change in policy resulting in DAP subsidy prices being linked to international prices with a lag of 2 months instead of 1 month enabled better predictability and management operations. Phosphatic prices are expected to remain stable for now but move upwards from September. Its fertiliser subsidy for Q1 FY10 was at Rs 67 crore.

As at 30th June 2009, it has repaid loans worth Rs 440 crore, while the outstanding subsidy, for the fertiliser segment, was at Rs 521crore. The company plans to repay foreign currency loans worth $44 million in January 2010, and will pay $30-40 million every year toward loans worth $300 million taken by its US unit General Chemicals. Its cash balance stood at Rs 1253 crore.

Stay invested.

Stock Idea: Supreme Petrochem Ltd.

INVESTMENT IDEA : JUGANOO – Multibagger Idea

Supreme Petrochem Ltd.

• The company manufactures polystyrene, Speciality Polysterene, Expanded Polysterene [XPS] and Expandable Polysterene [EPS].

• They are common plastic inputs used for making various Packaging products, insulation boards, toughned plastic parts for consumer electronic gadgets and high tech components for automobiles etc.

• Company has entered in to MOU with Nova Chemicals of USA for producing CUP grade EPS beads, with arrangements to sell back to Nova, as also to selected countries. This is a restricted high technology product, and if all goes well, company will setup 20,000 MTs capacity by June 2010.

• Company is also setting up SEZ for Plastic processing in Raigarh, Maharashtra and a minor port nearby.

• Last year's performance of company was poor due to tight availability of key input -styrene monomer, high volatiltity and falling trend in input prices, leading squeezed margins.

• Now, with improved supplies and stable prices of key input, the margins have improved from Q-4, and they are likely to remain so.

• With economic activity picking up, the demand for company's products will grow at a healthy pace. We expect company to report significant improvement in performance in current year.

• The stock is available at 3X of our expected earnings for 2010 and looks attractive for investment. Buy with target of Rs 55 in 12 month's time frame.

Background

The company manufactures polystyrene [2,72,000], Speciality Polysterene [25,000], Expanded Polysterene [XPS] [5,000] and Expandable Polysterene [EPS]. It is the leader in Polystyrene business in the Indian market place with more than 50% market share and is also the largest exporter of Polysterene from India to more than 80 countries. Its exports are also significant. It will expand the capacity of the speciality Polysterene products further to 50,000 Mts [from 25,000 Mts] in next couple of years. These are used in Alloys/ Blends/ Compounds/ Masterbatches of polymers and mainly in auto/autocomponents segment. Company has achieved TS-16949 certification, which is pre-requisite for product uses in automobile segment. XPS board plant is one of its kind with green technology, these boards are used as an important insulation medium for residential or commercial buildings, thus saving on air-conditioning and electricity. Company is developing Insulation as total value added solution to be offered to retail as well as institutional clients. The company has taken over management control of Shin Ho Petrochemical (India) ltd, and existing player in Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) in Chennai, with an installed capacity of 6,000TPA. Capacity expansion for the same is under progress. Company has entered in to MOU with Nova Chemicals of USA for producing CUP grade EPS beads, with arrangements to sell back to Nova, as also to selected countries. This is a restricted high technology product, and if all goes well, company will setup 20,000 MTs capacity by June 2010. The main inputs are Styrene Monomer and PBR. Styrene Monomer prices are directly linked to the crude prices which are steady now and the availability is also comfortable, with the new capacities going on stream in the current year in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Company is also setting up SEZ for plastic processing in Raigarh and a minor port nearby.

Risks and concerns

The key input Styrene monomer is also fully imported and prone to price volatility. As key input is fully imported and exports are also significant, so forex fluctuations/management is another risk.
